𐌂 What is Free/Open Source Software?

This page acts as if Free Software and Open Source are the same thing. Being strict, this is incorrect. However, the differences are so minimal that we will not mention them here. ×

What is Free/Open Source Software?

Free Software, also known as Open Source Software, is software which gives users several basic rights.

These are the right to use the program as you wish, to study and edit the program, and to share the program (both in original and edited form).

What does this mean for me?

  • You can always take your site with you, even when you leave ContraCode.*
  • You can edit and maintain your site yourself (although we will happily do this for you).
  • You could reuse your site for other sites.

Long story short: You are independent from us.

Why are you doing this?

We believe that Free Software is the only ethical kind of software, and consider treating our customers properly more important than reeling in a big profit. On top of that, we believe tho majority of users can be trusted.

P.S.: The ContraCode infrastructure runs on Free Software. We will happily give you a copy of the source code.

* If you are considering leaving us, please contact us. We may be able to resolve your issues.
